Picket near the border with Tajikistan in Uzun area of Surkhandarya PDF Print E-mail

On 6th July, 2010 in the rural citizens' gathering "Joncheka" of Uzun area of  Surkhandarya region, near the border post "Chumchukli jar", around the border with Tajikistan held a rally and picket. They were organized by local residents who a day before participated in the rally within the park of makhalla "Telpakchinor" devoted to the impact of SUE TALKO on the environment and health of the northern areas. Residents of the rural citizens' gathering "Joncheka" of Uzun area are first affected by the negative impact of emissions of hydrogen fluoride from the pipes of TALKO as they live closer than anyone from the plant.
It all started with a spontaneous gathering of residents of neighboring makhallas at the building of Agricultural College, where the talks have been given by a resident of a nearby makhalla Uktam Yuldashev, chairman of citizens' gathering "Joncheka" - Khurram Eshboev, a retired Ahmad Muhammad, a young researcher Muattar Hudaykulova and others. The assembled without hesitation supported the suggestion of speakers to arrange a picket at the border crossing "Chumchukli jar" on the border of two states.

Surkhandarians again require the halt to pollution PDF Print E-mail

On Monday 5th July 2010, a rally took place in the territory of rural gathering of citizens "Telpakchinor" of Uzun area, Surkhandarya region. Local residents and members of the public of the Uzun area, the activists of the Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan; representatives of the Local Women’s Committee, “Kamolot” (a public youth movement of Uzbekistan), regional offices of funds “Mahalla”, “Sog’lom avlod uchun”, the Regional Information and Analytical Centre of IICS, as well as specialists for the Regional Committee for Nature Protection, Uzun Region Medical Association and various other institutes with a common interest participated at this  rally.
One of the purposes of this event was to speak out about the problems of the impact of pollutants emitted by a State Unitary Enterprise “Tajik Aluminum Company (SUE Talko)”, which is causing environmental and health problems to the northern areas of Surkhandarya region, namely Sariasiya, Uzun, Denau, Altinsay. Another key feature of the rally was to attract a global audience, as well as the Tajikistan government to this problem.

Uzbekistan, UN Agree to Maintain High Level of Cooperation PDF Print E-mail

President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov met with Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, in Oqsaroy on April 5.
Welcoming the guest, the head of state pointed out the high level of rewarding cooperation of the republic with the UN on a number of critical areas of regional development.
“I consider your visit to the region, including Uzbekistan, a landmark occasion and evidence to immense concern of the UN with our region. The visit constitutes a fine opportunity to identify the issues in providing for stability and security, sustainable development, use of water and energy as well as mineral resources, protection of environment, and many other subjects that bother the peoples in the region,” said the head of nation.
The UN leader put in his turn: “I am delighted to work with my Uzbek colleagues in addressing the common issues on agenda between Uzbekistan and our Organization. When having a flight trip over the Aral Sea, I personally got convinced of the extent of adverse impact this disaster has had on the region’s entire ecosystem. I met with people living in this area of environmental devastation. It is hard to underestimate the challenges the whole region has faced.

Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, visited Uzbekistan on April 4-5.
First, UN Secretary General visited Nukus, where he took part in a presentation of activities, undertaken to improve the environmental situation in the Aral Sea region.
Targeted programs and projects, implemented under the leadership of President Islam Karimov in order to stabilize the environmental situation in the region, mitigating effects of the crisis, health promotion and social protection of population, are yielding results. Efforts are being carried out to carefully preserve the nature, restore its biodiversity.

Priorities in Parliament ActivityThe project of the Activity Program of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis is under development
Last week the lower house of parliament discussed some priority tasks of its activity and adopted the report on the Ombudsman’s activity in 2009.
Previously the Council of the parliament’s lower house discussed the priority directions of the activity of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis outlined in the report by the President Islam Karimov Upgrade of the Country and Formation of Strong Civil Society is our Key Priority. The Council adopted a relevant resolution and considered the report of the Ombudsman. Those issues were thoroughly studied during a week by political parties’ factions and deputies of the Ecology Movement.
